Message: The King of All Political Tactics
For almost every market there is an adage that says that something is king. For cars it might be “Cash is king!” It’s what the conversations and decisions are based off of. In a campaign, your message is king. Every technique you incorporate into your campaign, every press conference and every interview needs to revolve around your message.
Your message is essentially the theme of your campaign. It’s what makes you different from your opponent and it’s what makes you the right choice. Your message is the general statement that is the basis for your stance on the hot button issues in your district.
In order for you to win in a close race against an incumbent or even another candidate, you must have a strong, clear, unified message at the heart of your campaign. It is essential that you revert back to this message at every opportunity. Every flyer that goes out, every sign that is stuck on someone’s lawn and every interview given should come back to this message. If you don’t have a strong consistent message, you may very well come across as unorganized and not sure of what you want. On top of that, simply put, your message won’t stick with the voters.
Be forewarned, sticking to your message at every turn will not be easy. It is your opponent’s job to knock you off balance and to get you off course. Even your supporters may “encourage you” to go odd topic to address their pet issue, but if you stick to your campaign message consistently, it is what the voters will remember about you and it will be synonymous with your name and your campaign.
