4 tips for getting your political campaign off the ground
4 Tips on How to Get Your Campaign Moving
We mentioned a number of ways to build momentum for a campaign and ways to continue the momentum once it’s started, but in this post we’ll talk about how to get started with 4 tips on what to do first.
- Research
- Research is the most important aspect of beginning a run for office. Just jumping into a race head first is certainly a brave strategy, but if you’re going to put in the time, effort, and finances it takes to run for a political office, it makes more sense to have a bit of an idea of what you’re getting into. One great resource is to talk to former politicians and challengers in your area. Find out what they learned and what they would do different this time around.
- Get a Plan Together
- Is it possible to win an election without having a plan in place? Sure, you might get lucky or get a massive voter registration advantage, but if there is any kind of competition at all, you will need a plan to win. This plan doesn’t need to be an exhaustive step by step plan of what to do next, but you need to get together a plan for the major strategies: communications, foundational support, and fundraising. Delineate a plan for your campaign calendar, budget, and contacts.
- The Team
- Like it or not, you will need help in any run for office. Most of the time you need at least a campaign advisor, a team to help fundraise, go door-to-door, and in some cases, a team to run a campaign office. It is never too early to start building your team. The more cohesive relationship you have with your team, the better off you will be when it comes time to race for the office.
- Start Your Fundraising
- It is impossible to start your fundraising too soon. No matter what amount is needed for your campaign, the fundraising needs to begin as soon as possible. Once your campaign is kicked off, you will be too busy focusing on other things to worry about the financial aspect of your campaign.
